Sue Grafton was an American mystery novelist. She’s best known for the alphabetized detective series starring private investigator ‘Kinsey Millhone’. She also spent several years as a television writer. Grafton was born on April 24, 1940, in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father, C. W. Grafton, was a crime novelist and lawyer, and her mother, Vivian Harnsberger, a teacher. She had a sister named Ann. Grafton attended the University of Louisville, Western Kentucky University, and the University of Louisville. She graduated in 1961 with a BA degree in English literature. She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi fraternity for women.

CAREER
Prior to writing, Grafton worked a handful of different jobs in California. She worked as an admission clerk and later as a medical secretary. She began writing seriously in her late teens. Grafton completed her first major project at age 22. Her first novel ‘Keziah Dane’ was published in 1967. A second book titled ‘The Lolly-Madonna War’ was published in 1969. The book was adopted into a 973 film ‘Lolly-Madonna XXX’, directed by Richard C. Sarafian. It stars Jeff Bridges, Rod Steiger, and Robert Ryan. Grafton spent several years writing screenplays for various television programs. She wrote for the CBS sitcom ‘Rhoda’ starring Valerie Harper, and for the drama series ‘Nurse’ starring Michael Learned. Her credits also include Sex and the Single Parent (1979), Walking Through the Fire (1979), and A Killer in the Family (1983).

Grafton’s debut mystery novel, “A” Is for Alibi, was published in 1982. The book features private detective “Kinsey Millhon” in the fictional town of Santa Teresa, California. The Kinsey Millhone series continued with a new book for each letter of the alphabet. Selected releases include “C” Is for Corpse (1986), “J” Is for Judgment (1993), “P” Is for Peril (2001) and “V” Is for Vengeance (2011). The latest installment, “Y” Is for Yesterday, was published in August 2017. The series finale, “Z” Is for Zero, is scheduled for 2019. Grafton’s books have been translated into different languages and sold worldwide. She won multiple Anthony Awards and Shamus Awards for her work. She was awarded the Ross Macdonald Literary Award in 2004, and the Grand Master Award in 2009.
